CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Blue Devils had a successful Saturday at the UVA Ranked Plus One Invitational in Charlottesville, Va. with two players still retaining title hopes and a senior earning a ranked win.
No. 29 Reid Carleton improved to 2-0 on the weekend with a 6-2, 7-6 win over Calin Parr of Nebraska in the A-1 singles bracket. Carleton is the defending champion of the tournament and will face No. 50 Houston Barrick of Virginia in the semifinals on Sunday.
Freshman Henrique Cunha improved to 6-0 with his second win over a ranked opponent on the season. Cunha upended No. 35 Yohann Re of Virginia Tech 6-3, 6-2 and will take on No. 56 Lee Singer of Virginia in the semifinals.
In the backdraw, senior Dylan Arnould faced a tough test against No. 12 Austen Childs of Louisville. Arnould came through with a big win and will advance to the backdraw semifinals.
David Holland and Luke Marchese each won their backdraw singles matches in the A-2 singles bracket. Holland won in three sets, downing Kentucky's Alberto Gonzalez 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-5). Marchese defeated Louisville's Andrew Carter in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles Carleton and Cunha won their first match on Saturday before losing to the No. 1 team in the country, Tennessee's Smith and Sandgren, 9-8, in the finals. Marchese and Torsten Wietoska won 8-2 in the backdraw before losing 8-5 in the next match. Arnould and Holland lost 8-4 in the backdraw.
The tournament will conclude on Sunday with the remaining singles matches.
