CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Freshman Henrique Cunha and junior Jared Pinsky each won singles championships in their brackets at the UVA Ranked Plus One Invitational in Charlottesville, Va. on Sunday.
Cunha continued his great start to his collegiate career by winning the A3 Singles Championship. He won two matches against ranked players from the host school on the final day to earn his first collegiate title. He cruised past No. 56 Lee Singer of Virginia, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. He then took down No. 84 Drew Courtney of the Cavaliers 6-4, 6-3 for his fourth win over a ranked opponent. He is now 8-1 through the first two tournaments of the season.
Pinsky claimed the B Singles Championship with a win over Filip Svensson of VCU.
Junior Reid Carleton, who won the title at the tournament a year ago, made the finals again in 2009. In the A1 singles draw, 29th-ranked Carleton defeated No. 50 Houston Barrick of Virginia 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 to move on to the championship match. Carleton then lost a tight match for the championship against the No. 2 player in the country, Tennessee's John-Patrick Smith 7-5, 7-5.
Three Duke players bounced back from opening round losses to win their way through the consolation bracket. David Holland and Luke Marchese each won on Sunday in the A2 singles bracket to set up a match against each other. The match, however, was not played. Holland won 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-5) against Louisville's Alejandro Calligari. Marchese picked up a ranked win against No. 81 Patrick Daciek of Virginia Tech 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7). Dylan Arnould won the A3 consolation bracket. He earned a 7-5, 6-7, 1-0 (10-6) win over Davey Sandgren of Tennessee and then claimed a victory over Kentucky's Alex Musialek 7-6, 5-7, 1-0 (13-11) for the consolation title.
Next up for the Blue Devils will be the ITA All-American Championships, which begin Friday, Oct. 2 with the prequalifying rounds. The tournament will take place in Tulsa, Okla.
