DURHAM, N.C. – Another packed house was on hand Sunday as fans were treated to Carlyle Cup action between Duke and North Carolina. Prior to the meet, the Blue Devils seniors and their parents were recognized and thanked for four years of dedication to the Duke swimming program. But the Tar Heels played spoiler, downing both the Duke men and women.
The best race of the afternoon came early on, with junior
Ashley Twichell turning in a dominating performance in the 1000 freestyle. At the 800 yard mark, Twichell and Kautra Harvey of North Carolina were neck-and-neck. But throwing in a remarkable surge, Twichell broke away to win the race in a new pool-record time of 9:54.45.
Jackie Fasano wouldn't let the Tar Heels put a damper on her Senior Day, locking up third place in the 1000 freestyle.
In the men's 1000 free, Carolina's Joe Kinderwater set a new pool record with a time of 9:16.40 while Duke's
Nathan French and
Andrew Clark took third and fourth places in the event.
Freshman
Haley Read set a season-best mark in the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:54.70. Senior
Sean Smith stopped the clock in 1:43.01 to take fourth place in the 200 freestyle for the men.
The Duke men took control in the 100 backstroke as senior
Murillo Adrados fought to a first-place finish while his junior teammate,
Spencer Booth, took third.
Emily Barber was faced with stiff competition in the 100 breast, as North Carolina's Lauren Moriaty set a new pool record with a time of 1:03.50, but the Duke freshman was able to pick up a third-place finish. On the men's side, senior
David Carlson notched a second-place finish with a time of 58.24.
In a repeat performance of Friday night's meet against Virginia, freshman Benjamin Hwang won the 50 freestyle in a blistering 20.99.
After the diving break, Beall continued her outstanding Senior Day by taking second place in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.55. For the men,
Spencer Booth provided some excitement for the home fans, shooting into first place while Hwang took third.
Sophomore
Meghan Dwyer and freshman
Emily Kintz got the Blue Devil women back into the meet with second- and third-place finishes in the 200 backstroke. Moving on to the women's 200 breaststroke,
Meredith Bannon made the most of her final home meet taking second place.
In the 500 freestyle, Twichell came up just .45 seconds short of first place, holding on to second in a time of 4:54.89.
Nick Garvy notched an important win for the Blue Devils in the 100 butterfly, posting a time of 49.83.
In her final home swim, Beall won the 200 IM with a quick 2:06.39.
As has been the case much of the season,
Nick McCrory won both diving events on the men's side while
Abby Johnston took top honors for the women.
