CLEMSON, S.C. – The Blue Devils put the finishing touches on their 2009-2010 regular season Saturday. The Duke men fell to the Clemson Tigers by a score of 116-182, bringing their record to 3-6 (2-5, ACC); however, the Duke women notched a convincing victory, outscoring the Clemson women 158-142 for a final record of 6-5 (3-5, ACC).
After the Blue Devils dropped the first two relays of the meet, junior
Ashley Twichell helped right the ship by winning the 1000 freestyle in a comfortable 10:10.05. Swimming her final regular-season meet for Duke, senior
Jackie Fasano took second place in the 1000 freestyle, touching the wall just two seconds behind Twichell.
Shortly thereafter, Twichell returned to win the 200 freestyle, beating Clemson's Kristen Redmond by one second.
For much of the first half of the meet, the Clemson men were able to keep the Blue Devils from recording a first-place finish before junior
Spencer Booth finally broke through to win the 200 butterfly. Freshman
Jim Zuponeck helped keep the men close by earning a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke.
For the women though, the victories kept coming.
Emily Barber turned in the fastest 100 breaststroke performance of the afternoon, while seniors
Elizabeth Bellew and
Shannon Beall took first- and second-place, respectively, in the 200 butterfly.
As was the case for the majority of the season, the diving events were kind to the Blue Devils.
Nick McCrory picked up first in both of his events, as did sophomore and Duke record-holder
Abby Johnston. With his two wins, McCrory wrapped up an undefeated regular season which included two ACC Performer of the Week honors and three new Duke records.
Following the break, the Blue Devil women had no trouble continuing their winning ways. Barber earned her second victory of the meet in the 200 breaststroke, while Beall took first in the 100 butterfly and Twichell continued to assert her dominance by winning the 500 freestyle; her third victory of the day.
The men picked up some wins of their own, as Zuponeck defeated the field in the 200 breaststroke and
Nick Garvy took the top spot in the 100 butterfly, stopping the clock in a time of 49.97.
The Blue Devils will now have three weeks to train and taper before the ACC Championships. The women's conference championships will begin on February 17 while the men's competition gets underway a week later on February 24. Both events will be held in Chapel Hill, N.C. on the campus of the University of North Carolina.
