CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The 2010 Women's ACC Swimming and Diving Championships got underway Wednesday with the 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays. Virginia leads the standings after posting pool, championship meet, and conference records in both relays. Duke currently is locked in a tie for eighth with Georgia Tech; both teams scored 44 points in the first day of competition.
Emily Kintz,
Meredith Bannon,
Steffi Niessl, and
Shannon Beall paced the 200 medley relay for the Blue Devil women in an NCAA 'B' cut time of 1:41.30. Kintz led off the relay with a 26.29 split in her 50 backstroke giving Duke a strong start and helping the Blue Devils to a sixth-place finish.
The 800 freestyle relay showcased Duke's top middle-distance talent in
Katie Magee,
Kate Toth,
Jackie Fasano, and
Ashley Twichell. The foursome finished in a time of 7:25.25, eight seconds faster than Duke's top performance at the Gamecock Invitational earlier this season. Magee led off for the Blue Devils, posting a time of 1:52.37. Toth followed in a relay-assisted 1:51.61 while Fasano registered a 1:51.30. Twichell anchored the quartet with her time of 1:49.97 as Duke pulled in for a ninth-place showing.
Tomorrow five individual conference titles will be up for grabs. Beall and Niessl will swim the 100 butterfly, seeded eighth and tenth respectively, while Twichell will try to find a new gear in her shortest race of the championships, the 200 freestyle. The freshman-senior duo of
Emily Barber and
Meredith Bannon will face a tough field in the 100 breaststroke and Niessl will close out her day in the 100 backstroke.
GoDuke.com will also be updated at the end of each day of competition with results, standing, and meet highlights.
