DURHAM, N.C. - The Blue Devils were a perfect 6-0 in doubles on the first day of the ITA Carolina Regional with four teams advancing to the round of 16.
Two different Duke pairs won two matches on the day while two others received first round byes and won their second round matches. Overall this season the Blue Devils have a 22-5 (.815) doubles record.
Jared Pinsky and Fred Saba, who have already won one doubles title this fall, opened with a quick 8-1 victory over David Orces and Olzhas Taniyev from The Citadel. In the second round, Pinsky and Saba faced a tougher test in Elon's Cameron Silverman and Eric Turner but broke serve to go up 7-5 and then served out for the 8-5 win to improve to 6-2 on the season.
Cale Hammond and Alain Michel knocked off the No. 9 seed from Clemson Kevin Galloway and Wesley Moran by an 8-6 count in the first round. The Duke duo then won 8-5 over Alex Markov and Andrew McKinnon of Appalachian State.
The top seed in the tournament and No. 1 team in the nation, Reid Carleton and Henrique Cunha, cruised to an 8-3 win over Yaroslav Litus and Zack Reese from UNC-Greensboro and are now 7-1 on the year. David Holland and Chris Mengel, the No. 7 seed in the tournament, earned an 8-6 victory against Davidson's Walker Lyons and Chris Mark after receiving a first round bye.
The first round of singles will start at 8:30 a.m. on Friday morning with five Duke players set to see action. The top seed in singles is Cunha, who is ranked No. 2 in the nation and will receive a first round bye. Mengel will also earn a bye after being awarded the No. 12 seed in the tournament.
Hammond will be the first Duke player in action, taking on Charlotte's Mike Anders at 10 a.m. Michel will play Guy Kubi from Winthrop at 11:30 a.m. Next up will be Holland at 12:30 p.m. against Ivan Sanchez from N.C. State. Pinsky is the No. 17 seed and takes on McKinnon from Appalachian State at 1 p.m. Saba earned the No. 15 seed and is the last Blue Devil to take the court in singles, facing Ondrej Kralik from Campbell at 1:30 p.m. All of the round of 16 doubles matches will take place at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill following singles.
