DURHAM, N.C. - Duke had its second straight good day at the ITA Carolina Regional, winning four of five singles matches and sending two doubles teams into the quarterfinals.
The day started with singles as the Blue Devils earned wins in four of the five first round matches.
Freshman Cale Hammond started the day with his second career victory, cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Mike Anders of Charlotte. Junior David Holland followed with a 6-2, 6-2 victory against N.C. State's Ivan Sanchez. Senior Jared Pinsky rolled past Andrew McKinnon from Appalachian State in straight sets 6-2, 6-0 and freshman Fred Saba defeated Ondreg Kralik 6-2, 6-2. The four Duke players will advance to the round of 64 where they will be joined by No. 2 Henrique Cunha and Chris Mengel, who each earned first round byes.
The only Duke player to lose in singles on Friday was Alain Michel, who played his first singles match of the fall. Michel dropped a three-set decision to Guy Kubi of Winthrop 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.
One round of doubles wrapped up the day's events as the Blue Devils earned two victories in four matches.
The No. 1 team in the nation, Reid Carleton and Henrique Cunha, soared into the quarterfinals with an 8-2 victory over N.C. State's Jamie Pulgar and Ivan Sanchez. Carleton and Cunha will be joined in the next round by Pinsky and Saba, who came away with an 8-5 win over Davidson's Calum Gee and Joe Schafer.
Two doubles teams saw their tournament run come to a close in the round of 16 as they fell to seeded duos. Hammond and Michel were ousted by the No. 2 seed Joey Burkhardt and Jose Hernandez of North Carolina, 8-6, while Holland and Mengel fell to the No. 9 seed team of Danny Kreyman and Jonathan Wolff of Wake Forest, 8-6.
There will be two rounds of singles on Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. Following the two singles rounds will be the quarterfinals of doubles.
