DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke swimming and diving team was unable to edge out ACC rivals N.C. State when they lost 119-181 (M) and 147-150 (W) Friday evening in a dual meet with Campbell University.
The men's record now stands at 2-1 (1-1 ACC), while the women move to 1-3 (0-2 ACC).
The Blue Devils trailed the Wolfpack for most of the meet, but it was the women who rallied to tie the score and eventually take the lead early after the first break in action.
Noticeably different from the normal Duke logos the team draws on their body before a meet, this week the Duke "D" had the initials "FC" etched in them, in memory of the former Virginia swimmer Fran Crippen, who died in an open-water competition last Saturday.
In the 200 backstroke, sophomore Cara Vogel and junior Meghan Dwyer's one-two finish tied the score at 102. The women would then go on to lead the Pack by ten, but fell short in the final event of the 400 free relay to end the night trailing by three points.
"We challenged them at the first break," said head coach Dan Colella. "We came out, and they definitely stepped up. We had a one-two finish right out of the gate, which was absolutely necessary to be in a position for it to come down to the last relay."
Although the Blue Devil women are still looking for their first conference victory, they did pick up their first win of the season, defeating Campbell 238-49.
The Duke men were unable to hold on to their undefeated season when they lost to the Wolfpack.
The team struggled to find the finishes they needed to lead the Wolfpack. Sophomore diver Nick McCrory was the only Blue Devil to have a first-place finish for the night, capturing both the one and three-meter boards.
Both teams defeated the Pack in the 2008-09 season, but have not been able to find a win against them since.
"It's always a heartbreak when you lose, especially in a cross-town rival like N.C. State," said Colella.
This match concluded the fall portion of the 2010-11 Blue Devil swimmers schedule. Duke will resume action on January 15 when they host another duel meet featuring the Gamecocks of South Carolina and Queens University of Charlotte at 1 p.m. in the Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion.
The Duke divers will next head up the road to Chapel Hill to compete in the Nike Cup on Thursday, Nov. 18 and Friday, Nov. 19. The Blue Devils will then host the closing day of competition, Saturday, Nov. 20, at the Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion.
