TULSA, Okla. - The Duke men's tennis team received impressive performances from Reid Carleton and Henrique Cunha at the ITA/D'Novo All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. as the duo reached the semifinals in doubles and Carleton also made it to the semifinals in singles.
Carleton won his quarterfinal match with ease on Saturday. He went up against No. 27 Drew Courtney of Virginia and broke serve three times to win the first set 6-1. Courtney gained quick momentum in the second set by breaking Carleton's first serve but the Duke senior broke right back and would go on to dominate the set in a 6-2 victory.
In the semifinal match, Carleton faced his second top 10 opponent of the tournament. Going up against No. 8 Eric Quigley of Kentucky, Carleton suffered his first loss of the season, 6-4, 6-3.
In doubles, Carleton and Cunha had a rematch from the NCAA Doubles Championships quarterfinals last May with Virginia's Courtney and Michael Shabaz. The matchup featured two of the top three ranked doubles teams in the nation as Duke's top-ranked pair squared off the No. 3 team from UVA. The format for the semifinals went to best of three sets after the first three rounds were decided by one pro set.
Carleton and Cunha won the first set on a tiebreaker, 7-6, but it was Virginia who would come out on top as they took the final two sets 6-4, 6-3 to reach the finals.
Also in action on Saturday was freshman Cale Hammond at the Elon Invitational. Hammond lost his consolation match to Elia Ziamtsov of UNC-Wilmington 6-2, 6-1.
The Blue Devils will be back in action on Thursday as the ITA Carolina Regional begins in Durham and Chapel Hill.
