Blue Devils Compete at Wolfpack Open

RALEIGH, N.C.-Four Blue Devils brought home a combined four top-three finishes to lead the Duke University wrestling team at the Wolfpack Open. Duke freshman Tanner Hough led the way with a runner-up showing at 141 pounds, while the Blue Devils earned top three finishes at 125, 141 and 197 pounds.

Hough, wrestling unattached, was outstanding as he posted two falls and a major decision en route to the championship final at 141 pounds. Up against 13th-ranked Nick Nelson of Virginia in the title match, Hough fought hard throughout the seven minutes and came up just short in a 3-2 decision. The native of Johnstown, Pa., cruised through his first match with a fall in just 1:45. After disposing of David Yost of VMI in a 9-1 major decision, Hough made quick work of Old Dominion's Taylor Moeder with a pin in 4:26 for a chance against Nelson in the final.

Duke also brought back third place at 141 pounds with redshirt sophomore Brent Jorge working his way through the consolation side of the bracket after losing his opening match. Also competing unattached, Jorge picked up two falls and two decisions on his way to meeting NC State's Darrius Little in the consolation final. The Lakeland, Fla., native outlasted Little, 5-2, in the final match of the day to bring home his first top-four finish of the season.

Officially wrestling for Duke, redshirt junior Peter Terrezza took third place overall at 125 pounds. Terrezza opened the day with a 15-5 major decision over Robert Deutsch of Old Dominion to earn a spot in the championship semifinals. Seventh-ranked Matt Snyder of Virginia awaited Terrezza in the semifinal round. Snyder handed the Blue Devil his first loss of the day with a fall in 6:10. Terrezza bounced right back and won his next two matches to take third. He defeated Buddy Scarborough of Old Dominion in the semifinal and outlasted Erik Spjut of Virginia Tech, 7-2, in his final bout of the evening.

Freshman Conner Hartmann continued his strong start to the season by earning third place in the 197-pound division. The rookie edged North Carolina's Antonio Giorgio, 7-4, in the first match and lost to 18th-ranked Mike Salopek, 8-2 in the quarterfinal round. Hartmann resumed his winning ways in the consolation bracket as he posted consecutive falls and then edged Ryan Malo of Virginia, 7-6 in the consolation final for third place overall.

At 133 pounds, redshirt freshman Brandon Gambucci saw a familiar foe in fifth-ranked Devin Carter of Virginia Tech in the opening match of the day. Gambucci fought well, but lost in a major decision. He rebounded and won four consecutive matches to advance to the consolation final. Gambucci registered three convincing decisions and a technical fall en route to the third-place match. He met Virginia's Matt Nelson in the final, falling in an 11-5 decision to finish fourth overall.

Redshirt freshman Immanuel Kerr-Brown advanced to the championship quarterfinal with two decisions before falling to Scott Clymer of Liberty. The native of Rome, Ga., came back in the consolation side to win two more matches, including a victory over Rocco Wellek of North Carolina, and eventual lost in the consolation semifinal against Old Dominion's Pete Baldwin.

Sophomore Ryan Harding, competing at 157 pounds, also advanced to the consolation semifinals before falling to Matt Stephens of Virginia Tech. Harding finished the day 4-2, which included two victories over conference foes from Virginia.

Duke next competes at the Keystone Open in Philadelphia, November 20, before taking a break until December for final exams.
