ATLANTA, Ga. - The 2011 Men's ACC Swimming and Diving Championships got opened Wednesday, with the 200 medley and 800 free relays.
Virginia currently stands in a tie for first with the Clemson Tigers after both programs posted first and third finishes. In the first two events of Wednesday, no ACC meet, conference, or Georgia Tech pool records were broken, a first for the men's championships.
The Blue Devils currently stand in eighth place after day one with 46 points. The Duke men grabbed a fifth place finish in the 200 medley relay. The senior, and one sophomore, squad posted a school record time in the event (1:27.78), and grabbed an NCAA "B" standard as well. Sophomore Ben Hwang posted the fastest individual time of any of the men competing, touching in at 19.17.
The men lost some steam moving into the 800 free relay, finishing in ninth. The group did however manage to pick up a provisional standard as well for the event, with a time of 6:36.24.
"Although we didn't finish as high as we had hoped," said head coach Dan Colella. "We had some great splits, which are just great indicators of the days to come. It was a great evening for the Blue Devils."
