ATLANTA, Ga. - The Duke men closed out day two of the ACC Championships on Thursday, snagging first place in the 200 free relay. This was the first time in program history that a Duke relay team won first at the ACCs.
"This is something we have been looking forward to and training for since September," said Duke junior Ben Tuben. "It's just an unreal feeling. It doesn't get any better than this."
The team, composed of Duke's top freestylers (Ben Hwang, Spencer Booth, Ben Tuben and Nick Garvy), sprinted to a record-setting time for the Duke program, touching the wall at 1:18.52. This also collected the team an NCAA provisional standard in the event.
"We can't be prouder," said head coach Dan Colella. "This may be the first time that a Duke relay has won the ACCs. It was just an exceptional night."
To open finals on Thursday, sophomore Alex Harmon crushed the school record in the 500 free, placing 13th in the event with a time of 4:26.74. The record was previously set by Duke swimmer Jeff Anton in 1990. Harmon originally broke the record in preliminaries Thursday morning, then came back to finals and shaved off half a second on his time.
On the final individual event of the evening, Duke had two swimmers in the championships heat. A program known for its sprinters, the Blue Devils had four swimmers place in the 50 free. Sophomore Ben Hwang took the top spot for Duke, placing fourth, while senior Nick Garvy placed seventh. Garvy also managed to break his own school record in the preliminaries, posting a career-best time of 19.68.
"Everyone did their part tonight," said senior captain Spencer Booth. "I think we will draw a lot of momentum on this going into the next two days."
The rankings after day two currently stand as such:
1. | Virginia | 280 |
2. | Florida State | 199.5 |
3. | North Carolina | 196 |
4. | Clemson | 154 |
