ATLANTA, Ga. - The Duke men boasted another outstanding day for the program, breaking a school record for every event in which they competed in, and grabbing their first individual medal.
Competition opened Friday night with the presentation of medals from the 200 free relay the day previous. Drawing momentum from their first-place finish in the event, Blue Devil senior Nick Garvy bested his own record in the 100 butterfly, grabbing third in the event (46.94). This was the first podium appearance for the captain, who currently holds all of the Duke records in the fly events. Grabbing his own first place finish in his heat, junior Ben Tuben finished ninth overall in the event with a provisional standard, and a career-best time of 47.55.
"Everything we were hoping for in terms of momentum carrying that into today was exactly what happened," said head coach Dan Colella.
In another senior performance, Duke captain Spencer Booth grabbed fifth in the 200 free, breaking another school record and snagging a provisional standard.
Moving into the 400 IM, sophomore Alex Harmon grabbed first in the consolation heat, finishing ninth overall in the event and setting a Duke school record with a time of 3:54.07.
Sophomore Jim Zuponeck grabbed the last NCAA "B" cut in the 100 breast, finishing with a time of 55.51 and capturing 12th place. Breaking the school record in preliminaries that morning, Zuponeck came back and shaved off almost two seconds from his original time. The Blue Devils had a team-high five swimmers place in the event.
In the final relay event of the night, the Duke men placed sixth in the 400 medley relay, and no surprise, broke the school record in the event.
"We're in fifth place right now," said Colella. "It's going to be a real tight team race, and a lot of it is going to depend on how people stand up and race tomorrow morning."
