ATLANTA, Ga. - The Duke men's swim team closed the ACC Championships on Saturday with another-record setting day that captured the Blue Devils a fifth place finish for the program and setting 15 new school records.
"We're excited about our finish," said head coach Dan Colella. "We moved up another spot from last year. Right from September first, we've been preparing for what we had to do here. All that hard work has paid off with them breaking 15 school records." (14 swimming, 1 diving)
In the final relay event of the night, the Duke men had another historic first for the program, grabbing third in the 400 free relay. Touching the wall at 2:54.41, the Blue Devils broke the previous school record by over two seconds. Leading off the relay, senior Spencer Booth broke his own record set in the 100 free that evening with a time of 43.45.
Sophomore Alex Harmon opened the final night of competition for Duke, grabbing first in the consolation heat, and a ninth overall finish in the 1650 free. Harmon also grabbed a provisional standard for his finish.
True to their freestyle form, senior captains Booth and Nick Garvy both competed in the championships heat of the 100 free grabbing sixth and eighth respectively. Booth broke the school record in the event with a time of 43.73.
In an outstanding freshman performance, Hunter Knight grabbed a 13th place finish for the Blue Devils, followed closely behind senior Bryan Durazo with in 15th.
In the last individual event of the competition, junior Ben Tuben finished 11th in the 200 fly, grabbing a provisional standard with a time of 1:47.39.
The Duke men finished fifth overall in the ACC Championships and set 15 school records including: 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 500 free, 1000 free, 1650 free, 100 breast, 100 and 200 fly, 400 IM, 200 medley relay, 400 medley relay, 200 free relay, 400 free relay, and men's three-meter diving.
