At 141 pounds, Hough took a 2-0 lead with a late takedown in the first period. Samuel McGregor evened the bout with 26 second remaining the second session to set up a thrilling final stanza. Hough selected bottom to start the third period and quickly picked up a point for an escape to lead 3-2 with 1:43 remaining in the match. Hough added a takedown with 35 ticks left and then three more points for a nearfall to earn the 8-2 decision for Duke.
Redshirt sophomore Brandon Gambucci returned to the lineup at 133 pounds for his first career dual match. The Mansfield, Ohio native battled Matthew Nelson tough through the first two periods, trailing 4-1 heading into the final two minutes. Nelson scored five late points in the bout to earn the major decision.
Virginia added a pair of major decision at 149 and 157 pounds to stretch its lead to 18-3. At 165 pounds, sophomore Ryan Harding posted a hard-fought match against No. 15 Nick Sulzer. Harding trailed 2-0 after the first period and 6-1 after the second, but a big third session gave Sulzer the 15-4 major decision.
After a few tough matches for the Blue Devils, Brian Self had a hard-fought battle at 197 pounds. The sophomore scored the first points of the match with an early takedown, but a takedown in the second period and three more points in the third for Ryan Malo gave the Cavaliers the 7-2 decision in the ninth bout of the evening.
The Cavaliers closed out the match with a major decision at heavyweight to post the 39-3 victory.
