CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. - The Duke men's swimming team closed out its regular season Sunday on the final day of competition at the 2012 Virginia Tech Invitational, held at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center. After setting several new personal records on day one, Blue Devil swimmers saw more personal records fall during Sunday's events.
Freshman Stefan Knight started off the evening finals session with a second-place showing in the 100 free, swimming 45.42, while fellow rookies Michael Donnalley (46.97) and Tyler Toren (47.30) finished seventh and eighth, respectively. Meanwhile, Knight also recorded a personal-best 44.87 in the morning prelims of the same event for Duke's third-best clocking of the season.
Junior Evan Schwartz came in fourth in the 200 breast at 2:05.00 after posting a personal-best time of 2:04.59 in the morning session, while freshman Clay Sanders also topped in his previous best in the 200 fly with a mark of 1:52.19 in the prelims. Sanders came back to take fifth in the evening finals, touching in 1:52.33.
Toren notched a fifth-place finish in the finals of the 200 IM at 1:54.70 after registering a personal-best 1:54.25 in the morning session of the event. Sophomore Jon Derlath wrapped up the day's events with a seventh-place finish in the 1,650 free, swimming 16:10.27 for Duke's third-best mark of the season.
Duke competes next at the 2012 ACC Swimming & Diving Championships, which will also be held at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center in Christiansburg, Va. The ACC Championships for women's swimming and diving and men's diving are slated to begin on Wednesday, Feb. 15.
