CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The 22nd-ranked Duke volleyball team utilized a season-high 14.0 blocks to record its eighth straight win and defeat Boston College 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-18) Friday evening at Power Gym. The Blue Devils improved to 13-3 overall and 5-0 in the ACC, while Boston College fell to 7-8 (2-2 ACC).
“I was really excited to get this win on the road because we've been traveling a lot and every single one of these ACC matches is important,” said head coach Jolene Nagel. “BC's been having a really great year and we knew we would have to work really hard. We were excited to see our team come out and execute and control the tempo.”
Duke's defense held Boston College to a .088 hitting percentage, marking the 10th time the Blue Devils have held their opponent to under .200 hitting this season. Sophomore Jordan Tucker was a key reason, totaling a career-best nine blocks. Junior Breanna Atkinson also notched a career-high with six blocks, while sophomore Alyse Whitaker and junior Emily Sklar added three each.
“We were really excited to see the numbers we had in blocks tonight,” Nagel said. “We work very hard on our timing and setting the block and being disciplined with it. I thought tonight the team did a good job of that.”
Libero Sasha Karelov, the ACC leader in digs per set, continued her stellar play and paced all players with 17 digs.
“Sasha's doing a great job of being consistent,” Nagel added. “She handled very difficult serves tonight. Sasha controlled the ball when she had the chance to on serve receive and she didn't miss very many digs tonight.”
On offense, Sklar turned in a match-high 12 kills. Obeime and Whitaker joined Sklar in double-digit kills, chipping in with 11 and 10, respectively. Senior setter Kelsey Williams dished out 41 assists, marking her fifth straight match with 40-plus assists.
A solid defensive effort catapulted the Blue Devils to a 25-17 first set victory. Duke limited Boston College to nine kills on a -.022 hitting percentage, totaling 6.0 blocks and 26 digs as a team. Karelov's nine digs and Tucker's four blocks led the way. Down 9-7 early, the Blue Devil took control of the frame with a 13-4 stretch including six blocks. Up 21-17, the Blue Devils put the set away with three kills and a Sklar ace.
Boston College looked to shift the momentum with a 4-0 spurt to start the second set, but the Blue Devils maintained their composure en route to a 25-15 second set decision. Duke fought back to tie the score at seven-all before the two squads traded points to result in an 11-11 stalemate. A 9-1 Duke run, bolstered by three Tucker blocks as well as three Sklar kills, secured the set. Obeime and Sklar put down the final two kills of the frame, ensuring the 2-0 overall Duke advantage.
Duke finished off the match with a 25-18 third set. The Blue Devil offense totaled 18 kills, led by Obeime's six, and hit .607 in the final frame. A 3-0 Duke run broke a 15-15 tie and Boston College came no closer than two points the rest of the way. The Blue Devils closed out the match on a 6-1 run, featuring kills from Obeime, Sklar and Tucker.
The Blue Devils return to North Carolina to take on Wake Forest Sunday, Oct. 12 at 12 p.m. in Winston-Salem.
