DURHAM, N.C. – Outside hitter Emily Sklar knocked down a match-high 19 kills to lead the No. 21 Duke volleyball team to its 10th consecutive win. The Blue Devils defeated Virginia 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-23) Friday evening in Cameron Indoor Stadium for their eighth sweep of the 2014 season.
Sklar hit .302 while registering her ninth match of the season with 15-plus kills to pace a Duke (15-3, 7-0 ACC) offense which totaled 46 kills to Virginia's 35. Sklar also added eight digs and a pair of blocks.
Setter Kelsey Williams earned her fourth double-double of the season as the senior totaled 38 assists and 12 digs to go along with three blocks. Middle blocker Alyse Whitaker put down eight kills and chipped in a team-high four blocks, while middle blocker Jordan Tucker and rightside hitter Breanna Atkinson contributed six kills each.
Led by libero Sasha Karelov's 21 digs, Duke's defense limited Virginia (11-9, 4-3 ACC) to .155 hitting, marking the 12th time the Blue Devils have held an opponent to a hitting percentage under .200. Karelov crossed the 20-dig threshold for the eighth time this season and raised her ACC-leading average to 5.40 digs per set.
Middle hitter Natalie Bausback hit .417 with a team-high 12 kills for Virginia. Outside hitter Haley Kole joined her teammate in double-digit kills, adding 10.
“Our team relay focuses on one match at a time,” said head coach Jolene Nagel. “It was really important that we focused on tonight because we faced Virginia just two weeks ago. [Virginia] made some adjustments and we needed to be ready to adjust, too.”
Following two weekends on the road, Duke's offense came out firing on all cylinders in the Blue Devils' first match in Cameron since Sept. 28. The Blue Devils amassed 16 kills on .343 hitting in the opening frame, a 25-14 decision. Virginia scored the first two points of the match before Duke countered with a 7-1 swing and never looked back. Sklar dropped eight of her 19 kills in that frame and Whitaker added five to lead Duke.
Duke trailed 9-5 in the second set but regrouped to take the frame, 25-18. An Atkinson kill tied the stanza at 10-10 and the squads proceeded to trade the next eight points. A Duke block and Williams kill allowed the Blue Devils to eke ahead. The Blue Devils then closed out the set with a 9-4 spurt.
The Blue Devils looked to have the third set well in hand, up 22-17 following a Sklar and Tucker block. However, Virginia rattled off six straight points, including three kills from Bausback to stake a 23-22 advantage. A UVa service error knotted the score before Karelov fired an ace to set up match point. Duke then sealed the victory with a Sklar kill.
Duke returns to action Sunday, Oct. 19, hosting No. 11 North Carolina at 1 p.m. on ESPNU.
