NORFOLK, Va. – Blue Devil swimmers broke eight facility records en route to recording victories over Old Dominion and St. Andrews University Saturday in a double dual meet at the Monarchs' Swimming and Diving Facility. The women's and men's teams completed the weekend with a combined 6-0 ledger after also defeating William & Mary Friday evening, improving to 5-1 and 4-2 on the season, respectively.
“We raced really well last night against William & Mary,” said head coach Dan Colella. “It was a meet that was a lot more competitive than we had anticipated, but we did a great job. I was pleased that we came back this morning and raced as well as we did. It started with the medley relays winning and just kept going from there. That was a great way to get things rolling today”
The Duke women opened Saturday's action by eclipsing the previous pool record in the 200-yard medley relay as sophomore Jessie Sutherland, sophomore Ashleigh Shanley, freshman Leah Goldman and sophomore Maddie Rusch posted a time of 1:44.20 in a first-place showing.
Sutherland returned to the water later to take down a facility record in the 100 backstroke at 55.85 while Rusch had a record-breaking performance and a season-best mark in the 100 butterfly at 55.57. Freshman Isabella Paez finished just behind Rusch in the event (55.64) and also had a record of her own with a 2:00.23 swim in the 200 butterfly. That clocking was good for the sixth-fastest on the program's all-time top 10 list.
The Blue Devil men added facility records in four events, led by sophomore Peter Kropp's first-place finishes in the 100 (54.18) and 200 (2:01.16) breaststroke. Classmate Bradley Cline set a new benchmark in the 200 backstroke (1:51.07) after winning three individual events Friday in Williamsburg, and fellow sophomore Kaz Takabayashi broke the previous pool record in the 100 backstroke (50.48).
“Peter tried a couple of different strategies that played out pretty well for him,” Colella said. “Isa continues to perform well in the butterfly. Maddie Rusch and Leah Goldman both had a great day of performing and Kaz continues to swim well in the backstroke events. It was really just across the board.”
Other individual event winners on the day included Goldman, who touched first in the 100 and 200 freestyle and the 200 IM, and freshman MaryEllen Targonski, who took the women's 1-meter springboard diving competition with a season-best award of 293.24. That score was also good for the fourth-best all-time at Duke. The women's 400 freestyle relay of Rusch, junior Chelsea Ye, freshman Maria Sheridan and Sutherland claimed first with a season-best time of 3:29.53 and junior David Armstrong, freshman Alex Peña, Takabayashi and senior Stefan Knight won the same event on the men's side with a 3:04.57 clocking.
On the day, Duke swimmers and divers claimed first in 20 of 32 events and registered one-two finishes in the men's 200 medley relay, women's 200 freestyle, men's 100 breaststroke, women's 200 butterfly, women's 50 freestyle, women's 100 freestyle, women's 200 backstroke, women's 100 butterfly, women's 200 IM and the men's 200 IM.
“This group has been great in term s of learning from different experiences,” Colella said. “Every meet there's been something to build on. I think we're setting ourselves up for some great swims in two weeks at Nike Cup.”
The Blue Devils will be back in action Nov. 20-22 at the Nike Cup Invitational at North Carolina's Koury Natatorium in Chapel Hill, N.C.
