DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke volleyball team ended the non-conference portion of its 2014 schedule with a sweep of Oklahoma Saturday evening in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils downed the Sooners 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-20) to remain undefeated at home this season.
Breanna Atkinson, Jeme Obeime and Emily Sklar led the Blue Devils with a combined 39 kills on .373 hitting. Sklar turned in a match-high, 16-kill performance, committing just two errors on 30 attempts for a .467 hitting percentage. Atkinson added a season-high 13 kills to go along with nine digs, two aces and three blocks. Obeime reached double-digit kills for the ninth time this season, knocking down 10.
Duke (8-3) led Oklahoma (9-4)in kills, 49-33, as the Blue Devils hit .316 to Oklahoma's .183 clip.
The Blue Devils totaled seven service aces and did not commit an error on serve receive. Sophomore Chloe DiPasquale led all players with three aces and Atkinson and Laura Williams chipped in with two each. DiPasquale has had at least one service ace in five consecutive matches.
Duke and Oklahoma traded points to start the first set, reaching an early 8-8 tie. The Blue Devils posted a 4-1 run before the Sooners countered with a 6-3 spurt of their own. Up 19-18 late, Duke utilized four-straight Sklar kills and an Atkinson ace to put away the frame, 25-18. Sklar ended the set with seven kills on12 attempts.
The second set mirrored the first after the two teams split the first 16 points. Duke then won six-straight points with DiPasquale at the service line, including two aces from the sophomore defensive specialist. The Sooners came no closer than five the rest of the way, resulting 2-0 overall Duke lead.
Early in the third set, Duke and Oklahoma once again found themselves tied at eight-all. For the third time in as many frames, the Blue Devils found a way to make a run. Duke took control of the set with a 10-2 stretch that featured four Atkinson kills. The Sooners made it interesting late, cutting the margin to 21-18 following a Micaela Spann and Julia Doyle block. An Oklahoma service error couples with a Tucker kill and two Atkinson kills clinched the set, 25-20.
Kierra Holst was the only Sooner to reach double-digit kills and she finished the night with 13. Libero Emma Kelly led the Sooner with 12 digs.
Duke opens ACC play Friday, Sept. 26 in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils host Georgia Tech at 6:30 p.m.
