DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore Nicolas Alvarez will represent the Duke men's tennis team at this week's USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships (NIIC) at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. The NIIC, which runs from Thursday to Sunday, is the fourth national championship on the 2015-16 ITA National Tournament calendar. Earlier this fall, national champions were crowned at the inaugural Oracle/ITA Masters, Men's and Women's All-American and National Small College Championships.
Alvarez, the No. 7 seed for the event, will open the competition Thursday at 2 p.m. against Georgia Tech's Chris Eubanks. If Alvarez wins, he will face the winner of the Herkko Pollanen (Ohio State) versus Sam Monette (Indiana) contest Friday.
So far this fall, Alvarez is 4-2 with a second place finish at the Oracle/ITA Masters. He leads Duke with four singles victories against nationally ranked opponents as all six matches of his matches have been against ranked foes. The Lima, Peru, native started the fall with a pair of three-set victories at the Oracle/ITA Masters. He topped Baylor's Julian Lenz, ranked No. 4 in the preseason, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 and defeated Texas Tech's 18th-ranked Felipe Soares 3-6, 7-6 (7), 6-0 in the semifinals of the Oracle/ITA Masters. Alvarez fell to TCU's Cameron Norrie, ranked No. 15 in the preseason, 6-3, 7-6 (2) in the championship.
Alvarez's only other fall tournament was a 1-1 showing at the ITA All-American Championships main draw, downing Virginia Tech's Joao Monteiro in three sets and falling in straight sets to Illinois' Aron Hiltzik.
It is the second-straight year Alvarez has qualified for the NIIC, but he did not play last year due to illness.
