CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.—Duke redshirt senior Conner Hartmann and sophomore Mitch Finesilver headlined day one of the 2016 Defense Soap & Flips Wrestling Southern Scuffle for the Blue Devils. The duo both posted a pair of victories to advance to the quarterfinal round Saturday.
Overall, seven Blue Devils advance to day two of wrestling with Hartmann and Finesilver remaining in the championship bracket at 197 and 149, respectively. Joining the pair are Zach Finesilver (141), Jake Faust (165), Brian Dorsey (174), Alec Schenk (174) and Brendan Walsh (285).
Duke currently sits in a tie for 16th place with 20 points. The 20 points are five more than the Blue Devils had last year after day one, while the 15th place is a seven-spot improvement.
Hartmann, seeded second in the tournament and ranked third nationally, had no trouble in his first two bouts of the tournament. He turned in a dominant 17-0 technical fall to start the day and cruised to a 5-1 decision over Frank Mattiace of Penn in the second to remain unbeaten on the year. He will face Parker Hines of Air Force in the quarterfinal match. Hines upset No. 10 seed Scottie Boykin of host Chattanooga.
After receiving a bye to the second round, Mitch Finesilver held a narrow 1-0 lead heading into the final two minutes of action. He fell behind 2-1, but responded with five points for the 6-3 win over Ryan Mosley of Gardner-Webb. The sophomore added another win to his name in the round of 16, beating No. 2 seed Charles Cobb of Penn, 10-6, to advance to the quarterfinals. Mitch will wrestle against No. 8 seed Patricio Lugo of Edinboro for a chance at the semifinals.
Zach Finesilver, making his Southern Scuffle debut at 141 pounds, started the day with convincing victories to advance to the round of 16. He dispatched West Virginia's Christian Monserrat 13-7 and then scored a 9-1 major decision over Zac Hall of Michigan in the second round. A tough 10-7 setback to Lehigh's Cortlandt Schuyler sent Finesilver to the consolation bracket where he will wrestle Dylan Realbuto of Cornell.
Seeded fifth overall, Faust lost in a controversial overtime call. He nearly picked up the takedown to earn the sudden victory, but a quick move from Connor Flynn of West Virginia gave him the win. Faust rebounded with a convincing first period against Jordan Wohlfet of Central Michigan en route to an injury default win. He will face No. 4 seed Jim Wilson in a rematch of the pair's Hokie Open bout, which Faust won.
Similar to Faust, Dorsey lost a one-point decision to start the day, but rallied in the consolation third round to move into day two of wrestling. Trailing Zen Ikehara of Air Force 3-1 late in the second period, Dorsey scored a late takedown to tie the match 3-3. Just seconds into the final stanza, he picked up a reversal for the 5-3 win. He will wrestle No. 9 seed Brian Harvey of Army.
Schenk joined Dorsey in the 174-pound bracket, advancing on the strength of a second-period fall against Justin Lampe of Chattanooga. He will wrestle Bryce Carr of Chattanooga Saturday morning.
Walsh ended Duke's day with a win to advance to Saturday wrestling. After losing his opening match of the tournament, the senior turned in a dominating second period en route to a 6-1 decision over Navy's Nicholas Mabry. He will go up against No. 8 seed Billy Miller of Edinboro.
All of the action gets underway tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. Championship quarterfinals and consolation fourth round matches will kick off the action.
