DURHAM, N.C. – Graduate assistant defensive coach
Sam McGrath had the opportunity to travel to Rio de Janeiro for the Games of the XXXI Olympiad. McGrath was on hand for the 2016 Summer Olympics to support his fiancée, former Duke diver
Abby Johnston.
Johnston earned a silver medal in the synchronized three-meter springboard during the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and returned to the water for the 2016 edition while also being enrolled in medical school at Duke. Johnston finished 12th in the individual three-meter diving in Rio. McGrath is in his third year on the Duke football staff.
David Cutcliffe's Duke Football TV Show sat down with McGrath and Johnston and covered how the two met, why Johnston decided to pursue diving and medical school at the same time, McGrath's proposal and what the time in Rio meant to them both. Cutcliffe discussed his decision to allow McGrath to travel to Rio despite the conflicting football schedule and how happy he is for the two of them.
Duke (3-3, 0-2 ACC) travels to No. 7 Louisville (4-1, 2-1 ACC) for a 7 p.m. Friday night kickoff. The game will be televised on ESPN.
