DURHAM, N.C. – Four Yellow Jackets recorded double-doubles to help Georgia Tech end Duke's six-match win streak with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-15, 20-25, 24-26) decision Sunday afternoon in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Teegan Van Gunst (18 kills, 10 digs), Gabriela Stavnetchei (15 kills, 11 digs), Annika Van Gunst (11 kills, 10 digs) and Rebecca Martin (45 assists, 12 digs) paced Georgia Tech (17-5, 8-2 ACC) in a closely contested victory over Duke (14-6, 8-2 ACC), handing the Blue Devils just their second loss in the past 12 games. In addition, Georgia Tech's .236 hitting percentage was the highest allowed by Duke since Sept. 10 as the Yellow Jackets won their seventh straight contest.
“[We're] certainly disappointed to not get a W at home,” said head coach Jolene Nagel. “Georgia Tech is a good team. They have experience, they play good defense and they have some great offensive weapons. We weren't strong on the block today and we let some opportunities pass. We needed to serve tougher to get them out of system and we needed to stay pressed more on the ball so we could block some more balls. If we could've done those two things, it would've helped us a lot in a close match like today.”
Duke placed five players in double-digit kills, led by freshman Samantha Amos' 12. Jordan Tucker (11), Jessi Bartholomew (11), Leah Meyer (10) and Jamie Stivers (10) joined Amos in 10-plus kills.
Freshman setter Cindy Marina notched her ACC-leading 13th double-double, dishing out 44 assists to go along with 13 digs. On defense, libero Sasha Karelov led Duke with 19 digs while Tucker had a team-high five blocks.
Georgia Tech gained first-set separation before Duke countered to pull within a point, 15-14. Out of a timeout, the Yellow Jackets notched a block followed by a T. Van Gunst kill, Duke service error and A. Van Gunst kill. Facing set point and down by five, Duke fought off three set points before T. Van Gunst's seventh first-set kill clinched it, 25-22.
Duke won the first four points of the second set en route to a 25-15 victory. The Blue Devils forced eight Yellow Jacket errors and limited Georgia Tech to a .000 hitting percentage. Stivers and Bartholomew led the way with four kills each while Nicole Elattrache picked up six digs in the frame.
Georgia Tech's offense turned in its best performance of the match in the third, recording 18 kills and just one attack error to win the frame, 25-20. Tied 9-9, the Yellow Jackets received four straight kills to stake a lead they would not relinquish.
Up 20-16 in the fourth, Duke saw its advantage slip away as Georgia Tech outscored the Blue Devils 10-4 down the stretch. After a 4-0 run tied the set, the two teams traded kills before Georgia Tech eked ahead, 22-21, on a Sydney Wilson solo block. Wilson followed with a kill prior to three-consecutive Tucker tallies that gave Duke the 24-23 lead. Georgia Tech benefited from three straight Duke errors to close out the set and the match.
Next up, Duke hits the road for Boston College and Syracuse, taking on the Eagles Friday, Oct. 28 before faced the Orange Sunday, Oct. 30.
