DURHAM, N.C. – For its next-to-last weekend of fall action, the Duke men's tennis team travels to the Charlotte Invitational this Friday through Sunday. For the second straight weekend, the Blue Devils will send four into action with freshmen Spencer Furman and Nick Stachowiak and sophomores Ryan Dickerson and Jason Lapidus. Lapidus will participate only in doubles while the other three will play both.
“This is the last fall tournament for these four,” head coach Ramsey Smith said. “We're looking to build on what we've been doing and for those guys to finish the fall season strong. All four of these guys have been doing a great job and earned the privilege of playing this weekend.”
This will be Furman's singles debut, while he is 1-1 in doubles. Stachowiak owns the highest singles winning percentage on the team this fall at .727 with his 8-3 record. He is also 6-2 in doubles. Dickerson is 3-2 in singles and 0-1 in doubles, while Lapidus is 6-4 in doubles.
“I'm excited for Spencer to get an opportunity to kick off his Duke career,” Smith added. “Spencer has been working really hard and doing everything right, just hasn't been healthy enough to play. It's exciting he gets this opportunity now.”
Last weekend at the Wolfpack Invite, Dickerson advanced to the semifinals of the Red Draw and Lapidus paired with senior TJ Pura to capture the Red Draw doubles title.
“Jason has been playing some great doubles,” Smith said. “He has grown a lot as a doubles player and just played his best doubles ever in his last tournament. Ryan played the best tennis I've seen him play since he's been at Duke last weekend. He's committing to his game plan.”
Stachowiak last played at the ITA Carolina Regional, advancing to the Round of 32 before falling to No. 10 Ronnie Schneider of North Carolina. Stachowiak teamed with junior Nicolas Alvarez for doubles at the event and advanced to the semifinals. Furman also took part in his only action at the regional, splitting two matches with Pura in doubles.
“Nick is having a very solid fall in singles and doubles,” Smith said. “He's playing really well.”
Duke plays in its final fall events next weekend with the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship in Flushing, N.Y., and the Dick Vitale Clay Court Classic in Bradenton, Fla.
