DURHAM, N.C. – Duke women's basketball fans caught their first glimpse of the 2016-17 squad during the annual Blue/White Scrimmage Sunday afternoon in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The White team came away with the 76-58 victory over Blue.
“We had a really great summer in regards to getting in shape and being hopeful to have healthy players play full minutes,” said head coach Joanne P. McCallie. “These girls have pushed themselves to go harder and faster. We aren't there yet, but we took a step in the right direction today.”
Redshirt junior Rebecca Greenwell led all players with 26 points while redshirt sophomore Lyneé Belton totaled 17 on the afternoon.
Greenwell went 10-of-20 from the field while adding seven rebounds. Belton finished 8-of-13 on the afternoon and brought down 10 rebounds to add to her performance.
Several other Blue Devil returners turned in strong performances in the scrimmage, with senior Kendall Cooper totaling 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Sophomores Kyra Lambert and Crystal Primm notched seven and five, respectively, on the boards.
After sitting out the 2015-16 season due to NCAA transfer rules, junior Lexie Brown added five points to the White team's victory to go along with six assists, four steals and four rebounds. Brown was awarded the Iron Blue Devil Belt following the scrimmage.
Freshman Leaonna Odom made her debut in Cameron and finished the afternoon with 14 points to go along with eight rebounds.
As a team, Duke shot 42.7 percent from the floor and recorded a 66.7 free throw percentage over four quarters of action.
The Blue Devils will now prepare for their exhibition game against Charleston (W. Va.) Sunday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. before opening up the 2016-17 campaign on the road Friday, Nov. 11 against Liberty.
