TULSA, Okla. – It was a split day for the Duke men's tennis team during Tuesday's final round of the qualifying draw at the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships as the Blue Devils won one match and lost two. Freshman Robert Levine captured his round of 64 match while sophomore Catalin Mateas dropped his.
Levine had the first match of the day for the Blue Devils and upended Ronit Bisht of Texas Tech, 6-2, 6-1. Bisht was ranked No. 2 in the preseason Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) freshman/newcomer ledger while Levine was No. 9. Bisht also holds an ATP ranking of 890.
In the round of 32 with a trip to the main draw on the line, Levine dropped a 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (5) decision to Cal's Filip Bergevi, who was No. 77 in the preseason Oracle/ITA poll. Levine bounced back after the first set to take the second set. In the deciding third set, the two were on serve through the first 12 games and went to the tiebreaker. The tiebreaker was even at 2-2 before Bergevi rattled off four of the next six points to lead 6-4 and win it 7-5. Levine owns a 3-3 singles record this fall.
Mateas fell in a tight 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 decision to Yuya Ito of Texas in the round of 64. Ito stood at No. 3 in the preseason Oracle/ITA freshman/newcomer poll. Mateas dips to 4-2 so far this fall in singles.
