CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Duke volleyball team fell to North Carolina 3-0 (24-26, 20-25, 20-25) Thursday evening in Chapel Hill. With the loss, the Blue Devils dip to 12-17 overall and 5-11 in conference play as the Tar Heels elevate to 15-11 and 12-4 in ACC matches.
Duke was led by senior
Samantha Amos with nine kills and just three errors to hit .286 percent for the match and junior
Payton Schwantz with eight kills to hit .227. Setters
Camille Nazor and
Sarah Nelson dished 13 assists each while
Gracie Johnson led the team defensively with 14 digs.
As a team, the Blue Devils hit just .073 percent for the match as the Tar Heels hit .202.
The Tar Heels used their block to shut down the Blue Devil offense as Duke hit just .156 in the first. North Carolina registered eight total blocks as the Blue Devils went without. Duke took an early 6-1 lead to force North Carolina to burn a timeout early. With the set tied at 14-14, the Tar Heels took their first lead of the set (16-15) before jumping ahead 19-16, forcing the Blue Devils into a timeout. UNC registered its third service ace of the contest before Nazor tied it up at 24-all courtesy of a service ace. Duke was unable to close the first as Skyy Howard collected her sixth kill of the contest to give the Tar Heels a 1-0 advantage heading into the second.
Both teams had trouble finding their rhythm offensively in the second set with both hitting under .100 percent. Duke trailed 13-6 early, forcing them to use both timeouts in the set. Schwantz picked up four kills while
Lauren Cline and
Lizzie Fleming tallied two blocks each to help the Blue Devils bounce back 24-20 but were unable to hold off another set point as North Carolina took the set 25-20.
The Tar Heels used a .317 hitting percentage in the third and what would become the final frame to give them their 15th win of the season. The teams traded scoring runs throughout the last set and
Lily Cooper held off match point with her third kill of the day but were unable to hold off the Tar Heels.
The Tar Heels were led by Lauren Harrison with 12 kills and Aristea Tontai with seven blocks.
The Blue Devils will travel to Tallahassee, Fla., to take on Florida State Sunday, Nov. 24 at noon on ACC Network.
