BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Duke volleyball team swept Virginia Tech, 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-16) Sunday evening at Cassell Coliseum. With the victory, the Blue Devils improve to 8-11 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
Graduate student
Tiffany Paalman reached 300 blocks for her career this evening as she finished the match with a team-leading four blocks.
Offensively, the Blue Devils were led by
Taylor Williams and
Kerry Keefe with 11 and 10 kills, respectively, as the Blue Devils hit .295 percent for the match. Setter
Grace Penn dished 27 assists and tallied 11 digs, while libero
Mailinh Godschall led the team with 14 digs.
How it Happened
- Duke opened the match hitting .289 percent as Williams led the offense early with four kills on nine swings. Virginia Tech tallied four blocks, but Duke used three aces to take the first set.
- The Blue Devils continued their strong play and took a 2-0 lead in the match following the second set. Williams continued to have a hot arm with a team-leading six kills to hit .455 percent.
- Virginia Tech tallied more kills than Duke in the second set, but the Blue Devils hung tough and captured the set.
- Duke closed out the match with a .360 hitting percentage and limited the Hokies to a .121 clip.
- Breonna Goss, Tiffany Paalman and Rachel Richardson all tallied two blocks to keep the Hokies on their heels to take the match.
Notables
- It marked head coach Jolene Nagel's 710th-career victory and her 507th at the helm of the Blue Devils.
- The all-time series moves to 36-6 in favor of Duke.
- Duke won its second match on the road this season, and moves to 2-4 away from Durham.
- Penn tallied her fifth double-double this season.
- The match featured 21 ties and 13 lead changes.
- Duke's .295 hitting percentage was the third-best offensive output this fall.
- Rachel Richardson tallied seven kills, four digs, two aces and two blocks.
