CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Blue Devil volleyball team was swept by No. 25 North Carolina, 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-16), inside Carmichael Arena Wednesday night. Duke falls to a 4-10 overall record, including a 1-2 ledger in conference matches, while North Carolina improves to 10-2 and 3-0 in ACC play.
The Blue Devils were led by freshman Ashby Zubchevich, who logged a team-best 11 kills, while freshman Zoë Gillen-Malveaux followed with eight putaways. Defensively, sophomore Mailinh Godschall tallied nine total digs to surge Duke, while redshirt senior Ngozi Iloh tallied three total blocks.
How It Happened
Set One – Duke 20, North Carolina 25
- The Tar Heels jumped out to the early lead with a 25-20 win in set one. The first set was tightly contested, featuring 10 ties. The Tar Heels pushed past a 16-16 lockup, claiming eight of the next 11 points to take the 24-19 lead. Duke responded with a block from Wiliams and Iloh, but UNC notched a putaway for the final point.
Set Two – Duke 15, North Carolina 25
- North Carolina took the 2-0 lead with a 25-15 triumph in the second frame. The Tar Heels jumped out to the early 12-5 advantage, but the Blue Devils answered, taking four of the next five points, spurred by kills from Zubchevich and sophomore Avery Hamlin. However, UNC went on a four-score spurt, pushing its edge back out to eight, 17-9. The Blue Devils made a push, going on a 5-4 run, but UNC took four of the final five points to claim set two.
Set Three – Duke 16, North Carolina 25
- North Carolina clinched the match with a 25-16 win in set three. UNC held the 13-9 lead before Duke took four of the next five points, cutting the Tar Heel lead to 14-13. Momentum shifted back in North Carolina's favor, as the Tar Heels went on a 7-1 run, establishing a 21-14 edge. Duke earned its final two points off kills from Zubchevich and Gillen-Malveaux, however, UNC closed the match, taking four of the final six points.
