DURHAM, N.C. – In its second matchup of the season against in-state rival No. 25 North Carolina Saturday afternoon, Duke volleyball fell in straight sets, 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-23),  inside Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The Tar Heels posted commanding wins in the first two frames. The Blue Devils battled in the third, knotting the score nine times, including at 21-21. UNC secured the win, taking five of the final seven points. Â
Freshman Ashby Zubchevich led Duke with seven kills, while sophomore Taylor Williams followed with six. On defense, sophomore Mailinh Godschall tallied 14 digs, and redshirt senior Ngozi Iloh paced the net with a career-best seven block assists.
How It Happened
Set One – Duke 14, North Carolina 25
- North Carolina jumped out early with a 25-14 win in set one. The Tar Heels held an 8-7 edge, and pushed their lead to 17-9 after claiming nine of the next 11 points. Duke answered with two straight points, but UNC regained momentum with a four-point surge before closing out the frame by taking four of the final seven.
Set Two – Duke 17, North Carolina 25
- The Tar Heels extended their advantage to 2-0 with a 25-17 victory. The frame was tight early, as UNC held a 13-12 lead before breaking away with an 11-2 run to make it 24-14. The Blue Devils picked up late points with a kill from Iloh, a service ace from Williams and a Tar Heel error, but a Duke attack error gave UNC its final point in the set.
Set Three – Duke 23, North Carolina 25
- The third set featured nine ties and five lead changes, with UNC ultimately closing it out 25-23. After trailing 16-12, Duke mounted a 9-4 run to take a 21-20 lead. UNC responded with four straight points to reach set point at 24-21. Zubchevich and Iloh each added a kill to cut it to 24-23, but a Tar Heel block sealed the match.

- Duke falls to 4-11 overall and 1-3 in ACC play, while North Carolina improves to 11-2 overall and 4-0 in league action.
- The Tar Heels extend their lead in the all-time series to 72-56.
- Duke hit .033 as a team, while UNC posted a .214 mark.
- North Carolina led in kills, 37-25.
- Redshirt sophomore Nikki Quinn paced the Blue Devils with nine assists.
- Iloh finished with a match-best 4.5 total blocks and recorded her career-high seven block assists.
