DURHAM, N.C. – The Blue Devil volleyball team continues ACC play facing No. 25 North Carolina twice this week. The first matchup is set for Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m., inside Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill. Duke then hosts the Tar Heels inside Cameron Indoor Stadium Saturday, Oct. 4 at 2 p.m.
It will mark the first contest Duke is facing a ranked opponent this season, as the Tar Heels are listed No. 25 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll. The Wednesday match will be aired on ACC Network, and the Saturday match will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.  Â
Last Time Out
Duke opened ACC play last weekend with a 3-1 triumph over NC State Friday before falling to Wake Forest, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon.
Freshman Ashby Zubchevich powered the Blue Devils past NC State Friday night, registering a career-high 21 kills to lead Duke to a 3-1 (25-23, 20-25, 25-22, 25-21) victory inside Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils snapped a three-match losing streak and claimed a win in their ACC opener for the second straight season. Alongside Zubchevich's standout performance, sophomore Taylor Williams tallied 11 kills, while freshman Charlotte Glass dished out 22 assists and sophomore Nikki Quinn added 21 helpers. Defensively, redshirt senior Ngozi Iloh led with six block assists, while sophomore Mailinh Godschall paced Duke with 19 digs.
The Blue Devils and Demon Deacons battled in a tightly contested match, with no set decided by more than three points. After Duke volleyball claimed the opening frame, Wake Forest responded by taking the next three to secure a 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-23, 27-25) victory Sunday afternoon inside Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils hit .242 as a team, led by Zubchevich, who matched her career-high with 21 kills for the second consecutive match. Also logging double-digit kills was Williams with 13 and freshman Olivia Wayne with 11. Defensively, Godschall paced Duke with 25 digs, while freshman Zoë Gillen-Malveaux led the Blue Devils at the net with five block assists.
A Closer Look at the Series History versus North CarolinaÂ
Duke trails North Carolina in the all-time series, 70-56, including a 45-30 advantage for the Tar Heels in conference matchups. UNC is currently riding a three-match winning streak in the series with Duke, with the two programs meeting twice during the 2024 season, both resulting in sweeps for the Tar Heels. The series dates back to the 1971 season, when Duke claimed the inaugural win (score unavailable).

North Carolina owns a 9-2 overall record, including a perfect 2-0 mark in conference play, and is ranked No. 25 in the latest AVCA national poll. The Tar Heels opened ACC action with victories over Wake Forest (3-0) and NC State (3-1). Offensively, Safi Hampton leads the way with 148 kills, while Zoe Behrendt has guided the attack with 257 assists. On the defensive end, Maddy May has tallied a team-best 174 digs, and Jackie Taylor anchors the net with 50 total blocks.
