ORLANDO, Fla. – The Duke women's tennis trio of
Irina Balus,
Liv Hovde and
Shavit Kimchi are set to open action at the 2025 NCAA Singles & Doubles Championship this week at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Campus in Orlando.
Balus will be competing in singles, while Hovde will play in singles and doubles along with Kimchi.
A native of Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, Balus is making her second appearance in the NCAA Singles Championship. Balus is currently ranked No. 14 nationally in singles and received the NCAA invite by advancing to the quarterfinals at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American. Last year, Balus dropped a first round match to 16th-ranked Julia Garcia Ruiz of Oklahoma in the singles championship.
Balus opens action in the round of 64 Tuesday versus Eugenia Zozaya Menendez of Southern California at 5:30 p.m.
Hovde, who is from Daniel Island, South Carolina, will make her NCAA Singles and Doubles Championship debut. She earned the NCAA singles invite by defeating Marina Genis Salas of Virginia in a playoff at the ITA Sectionals. Hovde has collected a 6-4 singles record this fall and is currently ranked No. 49 nationally.
Hovde faces 102nd-ranked Zuzanna Kubacha of Baylor in round one at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday.
In doubles, Hovde and Kimchi won all three of their matches at ITA Sectionals this month to receive the NCAA Doubles Championship invite. They have combined for an 8-1 ledger so far this fall. They will go up against Mao Mushika/Greta Greco Lucchina of California in the round of 32 Wednesday.
This marks the second year of a two-year plan for the singles and doubles championships to be conducted in the fall, with the team championships continuing to be held in the spring.
