MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Duke men's golf secured a third-place finish at the General James Hackler Championship on Tuesday, March 18. The Blue Devils ended the event with a 9-under, 279, en route to a 14-under, 850, across the three rounds.
Ethan Evans posted yet another under-par round, shooting a 2-under, 70, and finished in second place overall, at 11-under, 205.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- All five Blue Devils finished at even-par or better in the final round.
- Bryan Kim paced Duke with a 3-under, 69, on Tuesday. The sophomore got into red figures with a birdie on the par-5 fourth and poured in three more front-nine birdies, on holes No. 6, 8 and 9. A dropped shot on No. 11 was erased with a birdie on the par-5 13th, before a single remaining bogey, on No. 17, ended Kim's round at 3-under. Kim ended the event with an under-par round on all three days, finishing in a tie for ninth place at 5-under, 211.Â
- The trio of Ethan Evans, William Love and Luke Sample each signed for a 2-under, 70.
- Evans played the front-nine at 2-under, with seven pars and two birdies, on No. 3 and No. 6. Back-to-back bogeys, on holes No. 13 and 14, were immediately erased with back-to-back birdies across the next two holes, the par-5 15th and par-4 16th. Evans' third straight day in red figures helped the junior finish in second place overall, at 11-under, 205.Â
- Love began his day with consecutive bogeys but got back to even-par with an eagle on the par-5 fourth. A birdie on No. 7 moved the junior to 1-under, which remained the case as he moved to the back-nine. Love took advantage of both back-nine par-5's, rolling in a birdie on No. 13 and then his second eagle of the round on No. 15, while dropping shots on No. 10 and 18 to play the back-nine at 1-under. Love finished in a tie for 28th overall, at 1-over, 217.Â
- Sample started his round with a bogey on No. 2, but played the remainder of his round bogey-free, while adding three birdies. His first birdie came on No. 4 and he then played the back-nine at 2-under, with birdies on No. 11 and No. 16. The senior's best round of the weekend helped move Sample into a tie for 66th at 10-over, 226.Â
- Kelly Chinn capped off Duke's lineup with an even-par, 72, on Tuesday. The senior began the round with two bogeys across the first three holes, but bounced back with three birdies across his next five holes. A dropped shot on No. 9 sent Chinn to the back-nine at even-par, where he matched Love's effort on the par-5's, with a birdie on No. 13 and an eagle on No. 15, while scattering three bogeys across the final nine holes. Chinn tied for 38th overall at 3-over, 219, for the tournament.Â
