PALM CITY, Fla. – Duke men's golf shot its best round of the 2025 Valspar Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday, March 25, firing an 8-under, 276 and finishing in sixth place at 19-under, 833, overall.
Kelly Chinn posted a season-low score-to-par and a career-low total score, shooting an 11-under, 202, to finish in a tie for fourth place overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED: ROUND THREE
- As a team, Duke shot its lowest score of the tournament, an 8-under, 276, in the final round.
- Kelly Chinn continued his low scoring on Tuesday with a 3-under, 68. The senior picked up where he left off in the second round, with back-to-back birdies on his first two holes, the par-5 fifth and the par-4 sixth. After moving to the back-nine at 3-under, Chinn's first bogey of the round was erased with three consecutive birdies on holes No. 13-15, moving him back to 5-under for the round. Two dropped shots across his last seven holes dropped Chinn to 3-under for the round, where he finished. Overall, the senior secured a tie for fourth on the individual leaderboard, at 11-under, 202, for the event.
- The duo of Bryan Kim and Ethan Evans each carded a 2-under, 69, in the third round.
- After starting with six consecutive pars, Kim poured in four birdies across his next five holes, before a double-bogey on No. 18 sent the sophomore to the front-nine at 2-under. A bogey on the par-3 fourth was erased with a birdie on the ensuing hole, the 637-yard, par-5, fifth to close out his 2-under third round. Overall, Kim shot a 5-under, 208 and tied for 16th place.
- Evans started his morning with a birdie on the par-5 seventh and reached 3-under following back-to-back birdies on No. 13 and 14. After consecutive bogeys on his next two holes, Evans righted the ship with a birdie on the par-4 17th and turned back to the front-nine at 2-under. Four pars, mixed with a single birdie and lone bogey, wrapped up his third round. Evans ended the tournament at 1-over, 214, and tied for 44th.
- Luke Sample carded his second under-par round of the tournament, signing for a 1-under, 70, on Tuesday. The senior played steadily all round, with 15 pars, two birdies and just a single bogey. Overall, Sample finished at 7-over, 220, and tied for 69th.
- William Love shot a 2-over, 73, to round out Duke's lineup in the third round. Love posted a 4-over, 217, score across his three rounds and tied for 57th on the leaderboard.
NOTES
- As a team, Duke finished 26-under on the par-5's, fourth-best by any team in the field on those holes.
- The Blue Devils finished with 60 birdies, tied for fifth-most in the field.
- Duke has now finished under-par as a team in eight of its last 10 rounds.
- Kelly Chinn posted his career-low total score with 11-under, 202. His previous career low was a 203, set during his freshman year after shooting 10-under at the same event, the Valspar Collegiate.
- Chinn's 11-under set a new season low for score-to-par for the senior.
- Chinn finished the event with 16 total birdies, matching his season high for most in a tournament.
- William Love rolled in two eagles for the second consecutive tournament and now has seven for the season, matching his freshman total for the most in a single season.
- Love was one of six individuals to have a field-leading two eagles.
HOW IT HAPPENED: UNCW SEAHAWK INTERCOLLEGIATE
- The five individuals competing at the UNCW Seahawk Intercollegiate also concluded play on Tuesday.
- Daniel Choi used a 3-under, 68, in the final round to finish as the low Blue Devil for the event. Choi ended the event tied for 12th place, at even-par, 213.
- John Hiller also carded a 3-under, 68, setting a new career low for a single round. The freshman tied for 36th at 7-over, 220.
- Ollie Mukherjee also finished under-par in the third round, signing for a 2-under, 69. The freshman tied for 18th overall, at 1-over, 214, his second straight finish inside the top-20.
- Sam Mukherjee shot a 5-over, 76, in the final round and finished in a tie for 26th place, at 5-over, 218.
- John Peters rounded out Duke's representation with a 5-over, 76, in the final round and tied for 50th overall at 10-over, 223.
