WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. –
Bryan Kim tied a Duke men's golf record with a 54-hole score of 197 (-16) to claim individual medalist honors at the Bryan Bros Collegiate, hosted by South Carolina at Solina Golf Club on Sept. 28-29.
Kim, a junior from Brookeville, Maryland, fired back-to-back rounds of 5-under-par 66 before closing with a 6-under 65 to match his career-low 18-hole score. He finished five strokes clear of the field to secure the first tournament victory of his collegiate career.
"It means a lot because I feel like I've been knocking on the door and my game has been pretty solid this past year," Kim said. "To put myself in contention and then capitalize and win the event was special. Hopefully the first of many."
On the 6,827-yard, par-71 course, Kim tallied 10 birdies without an over-par hole through the first 36 holes. His only bogey of the tournament came on his third hole of the final round, which he offset with three more birdies and two eagles. His second eagle came on the 411-yard, par-4 13th, where he holed a blind approach from 118 yards out with a gap wedge.
Kim led the 84-player field in par-4 scoring at 8-under (3.70) and tied for third on par-5 holes at 4.33 (-8).
"I think it was a perfect course for me because it's short and you need to hit your tee shot straight," Kim added. "My driver and wedges are the strongest parts of my game, so it matched up pretty well."
Kim's 197 matched the program record set by Alex Smalley during the 2018-19 season. His teammate
William Love is the only other Blue Devil to record a sub-200 total, posting a 199 (-17) in February 2023. Kim has now posted seven rounds in the 60s this fall and 18 for his career.
As a team, Duke placed fifth in the 15-team field with a score of 833 (281-275-277, -19), finishing one stroke behind host South Carolina and 10 shots ahead of sixth-place Charleston. LSU won the team title at 817 (-35), three strokes clear of runner-up Charlotte.
The Blue Devils' second-round 9-under 275 marked their best team score of the season. Duke ranked fourth in the field in both pars (173) and birdies (51).
First-year Duke head coach
Bob Heintz praised his team's resilience after a slow start.
"We started out 7-over after our opening nine, and to get all the way back to 19-under is pretty impressive," Heintz said.
Senior
Ethan Evans was one of several Blue Devils who embodied that grit, rebounding from a 6-over start through eight holes in the first round with six birdies over his final 10 holes to finish with a 71 (+1). He added rounds of 70 (-1) and 71 to tie for 31st at even-par 213. Sophomore
Sam Mukherjee also tied for 31st with a 213 total (72-72-69), matching his career low with a final-round 69 (-2).
Love tied for 49th at 218, highlighted by a second-round 67 (-4) — his lowest score of the season and the 20th round in the 60s of his career. Freshman
Charles Nelson closed with a counting score of 72 (+1) after a tough start on Monday.
The Blue Devils return to South Carolina for their next event, The Bryson Invitational, set for Oct. 13-15 at Daniel Island Golf Club's Ralston Creek course in Charleston.
