DURHAM, N.C. – Freshman
Adelyn Matthews delivered the game-winning double in the bottom of the seventh to lift Duke to a 7-6 walk-off win over No. 11 Virginia Tech Friday night at Smith Family Stadium.
The Blue Devils snapped Virginia Tech's 15-game win streak, improving to 17-9 overall and 4-0 in ACC action while the Hokies drop to 22-3 and 0-1 in conference play.
The offense was highlighted by graduate student
Tyrina Jones, who launched her first career grand slam in the opening frame. The Lake Worth, Fla., native finished 1-for-3 at the plate with four RBIs and one walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blue Devils quickly loaded the bases with three of the first four batters drawing walks. Jones followed with a grand slam deep to center field to stretch an early 4-0 lead.
- Duke continued to build on its lead in the bottom of the fourth as redshirt junior Jessica Oakland slipped a base hit into right field to score senior Aminah Vega from second. Vega reached on a walk before moving into scoring position on a wild pitch.
- Freshman Gabriella Shadek extended Duke's advantage to 6-0 in the fifth, sending a sacrifice fly to left field to push senior Aleyah Terrell across the plate. Terrell was pinch running for Jones after she drew a walk and moved up on a wild pitch.
- The Hokies began to claw back late in the game, posting back-to-back three run frames to even the score, 6-6. Virginia Tech's Gaby Mizelle sparked the comeback with a three-run blast in the top of the sixth.
- Senior KK Mathis opened the bottom of the seventh with a double to center field before freshman London Collins entered to pinch run. A few batters later, Matthews ripped a two-out double into the right center field gap, scoring Collins to walk it off, 7-6.
NOTES
- Jones recorded the first grand slam of her career and eighth in program history.
- Matthews was the only Blue Devil to record a multi-hit outing, her third of the season, batting 2-for-3 during the contest.

- Curd collected a game-high five strikeouts to bring her season total to 68.
- Sophomore Mallory Wheeler and junior Larissa Jacquez each entered the game in relief, working 1.1 and 0.1 innings, respectively.
- Jacquez earned the win and moves her season ledger to 3-3.
