Duke Places Fifth at Sahalee Players Championship

SAMMAMISH, Wash. – Duke men's golf opened its 2026-27 campaign with a fifth-place finish against a highly competitive field at the Sahalee Players Championship, carding a 54-hole total of 895 (+31) on the 7,007-yard, par-72 Sahalee Country Club. All 12 teams in the field finished last season ranked among the top 50 in the Scoreboard rankings, including seven inside the top 20.

The Blue Devils, who were tied for seventh after Saturday's opening round, used a 1-over 289 in the second round to climb three positions into fourth place entering Sunday's final round. Duke finished fifth overall behind a pair of top-10 individual performances from sophomore Carson Looney and junior Ollie Mukherjee.

Making his Duke debut, Looney placed eighth at 3-over 219 (77-68-74), highlighted by a second-round 68 that was the lowest score in the field during the round. The Bethesda, Maryland, native closed the weekend as the tournament leader in par-3 scoring, playing those holes at 4-under with a 2.67 scoring average.

Mukherjee finished one stroke behind Looney, tying for ninth at 4-over 220 (72-73-75). The East Lothian, Scotland, native tied for eighth in the field in par-4 scoring with a 4.10 average (+3) and shared the Duke lead with senior Bryan Kim with eight birdies.

Kim and junior Sam Mukherjee tied for 41st at 13-over 229, while junior John Hiller placed 59th at 20-over 236. Freshman Clark Mason, competing as an individual in his collegiate debut, tied for 57th at 19-over 235.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Duke opened the tournament with a 13-over 301 and ended the first round tied for seventh place.
Ollie Mukherjee led the Blue Devils in the opening round with an even-par 72, closing his round with an eagle on the par-5 18th hole.
Duke made its move in the second round, combining 13 birdies and two eagles to post a 1-over 289 and climb three spots into fourth place.
Looney spearheaded the second-round surge with a 4-under 68, the best score of the round in the tournament field and the second-lowest round posted by any player Saturday.
Looney eagled the par-5 sixth and 11th holes and added two birdies during his second round.
Facing cold and rainy weather conditions on Sunday, Duke closed the championship with a 17-over 305 to secure fifth place.
Looney finished his final round with 10 pars and one birdie across his last 11 holes, including nine consecutive pars on the closing nine.

NOTES

Duke finished fifth in a 12-team field in which every program was ranked among the top 50 at the conclusion of the 2025-26 season. Seven teams entered the weekend having finished last season among the top 20.
Carson Looney placed eighth in his Duke debut for his first top-10 finish as a Blue Devil.
Looney's second-round 68 marked his ninth collegiate round in the 60s after recording eight during his freshman season at VCU in 2025-26.
Looney led the tournament field in par-3 scoring at 4-under with a 2.67 scoring average and tied for 10th in par-5 scoring at 5-under with a 4.58 average.
Ollie Mukherjee tied for ninth, giving Duke two players among the top 10.
Mukherjee tied for eighth in the field in par-4 scoring at 4.10 (+3).
Mukherjee and Bryan Kim paced Duke with eight birdies apiece, while Looney added seven.
Duke tallied three eagles during the tournament, with Looney recording two in the second round and Mukherjee adding one in the opening round.
Freshman Clark Mason recorded an eagle during the first round of his collegiate debut while competing as an individual.
As a team, Duke ranked third in par-3 scoring with a 3.28 average, tied for second in the field with three eagles and ranked fourth with 156 pars.

UP NEXT

Duke returns to action Monday, Sept. 21, when the Blue Devils host the 16th annual Rod Myers Invitational at Duke University Golf Club. The opening two rounds will be played Monday, followed by the final round Tuesday, Sept. 22.
