Duke Finishes Fourth, Nelson Places Top 10 at Rod Myers Invitational

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke men's golf finished fourth at the 16th annual Rod Myers Invitational, which was shortened to 36 holes due to weather, at Duke University Golf Club on Sept. 21-22.

The Blue Devils posted a 9-under-par 567 over two rounds, opening with a 2-under 286 before improving by five strokes with a 7-under 281 in the second round. The second round began Monday afternoon before being suspended due to weather and was completed Tuesday. Duke finished behind tournament champion UNCG (-20), UNCW (-15) and Harvard (-12) in the 13-team field.

Sophomore Charles Nelson led Duke's individual contingent, tying for sixth at 5-under 139. Competing as an individual, Nelson followed an even-par 72 with a career-low 5-under 67 in the second round to secure the best finish of his collegiate career. Freshman Clark Mason also turned in his best collegiate performance to date, tying for 14th at 3-under 141 after rounds of 73 and 68.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Duke opened the tournament with a 2-under 286 on Monday before beginning the second round later that afternoon. Play was suspended due to weather before the round was completed Tuesday, with the Blue Devils finishing the second round at 7-under 281 to close the tournament at 9-under 567 and in fourth place.
Bryan Kim led Duke's five-player lineup, tying for 14th at 3-under 141. The senior bounced back from an opening 1-over 73 with a 4-under 68 in the second round, shooting 5-under par on the front nine.
Ollie Mukherjee played both rounds at par or better, signing for an even-par 72 and 2-under 70 to tie for 20th at 2-under 142.
Carson Looney and Sam Mukherjee each tied for 23rd at 1-under 143. Looney carded rounds of 71 and 72, while Mukherjee posted a 72 and 71.
John Hiller rounded out Duke's lineup in a tie for 41st at 2-over 146, shooting a 1-under 71 in the opening round before a second-round 75.
Playing as an individual, Nelson moved up the leaderboard with his career-low 67 in the second round. His 5-under 139 total earned him a tie for sixth and marked his best collegiate finish.
Nelson's unblemished second-round scorecard included five birdies and 13 pars.
Mason, who made his collegiate debut at the Sahalee Players Championship, recorded the two lowest rounds of his young Duke career. After opening with a 1-over 73, the St. Petersburg, Florida, native carded a 4-under 68 to finish tied for 14th at 3-under.
Mason tallied six second-round birdies.
Jonathan Weinberg and Alexander Weinberg also competed as individuals, finishing at 11-over 155 and 28-over 172, respectively.
The second round began Monday afternoon, but was suspended due to weather and completed Tuesday. The tournament was shortened from its scheduled 54 holes to 36 holes, with the third and final round canceled.

NOTES

Duke finished third in the field in both par-4 scoring, averaging 4.01 (+1), and par-5 scoring, averaging 4.70 (-12).
Nelson led the entire field in par-4 scoring, playing those holes at 6-under with a 3.70 scoring average.
Nelson and Mason each recorded 11 birdies, tied for second-most in the field.
Sam Mukherjee tied for third among all players with 27 pars.
Duke's second-round 281 was five strokes better than its opening round and matched the third-lowest team score of the round.
