
Stokke Wins First Qualifying Match at All-American Tennis Championships

Tulsa, Okla. - Jonathan Stokke won in straight sets on Monday to advance to the round of 64 in the qualifying rounds of the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
Stokke, a senior from Chapel Hill, N.C., entered the tournament qualifying round as the sixth seed. He faced Irving Morales of Troy in the first round and came away with a 6-4, 6-4 victory to advance. He will take on Danny Bryan of LSU in the second round on Tuesday. Bryan defeated Northwestern's Willy Lock in straight sets in the first round, 7-6 (4), 6-4.
In the first tournament of the season, Stokke advanced to the quarterfinals before losing to Georgia's John Isner, who went on to win the tournament. Stokke lost in straight sets of the first round of qualifying in last year's All-American Championships.
Peter Rodrigues also competed on Monday and lost his first match of the year in three sets. He lost to Jan Zelezny of the University of Colorado 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (3). Zelezny will move on to face Florida's Chris Brandi on Tuesday. Brandi rallied to win his first match in three sets against Anton Tsymbalov of Indiana State, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.
Rodrigues is competing in his first tournament of the season. He made it to the second round of qualfying in last year's All-American Championships before losing in straight sets.
The doubles tournament will begin on Tuesday with the first and second rounds. Duke has two teams competing in the qualifying rounds. Stokke and Joey Atas receive a bye in the first round. They are coming off a doubles championship at the Southern Intercollegiates in Athens, Ga. on Sept. 26. The other pairing for Duke, Rodrigues and Ludovic Walter, will take on Federico Murgien and Peter Oredsson of Southern Methodist University.
The tournament is being held at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center and is hosted by the University of Tulsa. The qualifying will go through Wednesday with the winners in the third round of qualifying matches advancing on to the main draw. The main draw will begin on Thursday with the finals to take place on Sunday.
