
No. 10 Duke Cruises to 5-0 Victory Over No. 24 Texas A&M on Sunday

Durham, N.C. - No. 10 Duke won two of the three doubles and four singles matches to defeat No. 24 Texas A&M 5-0 on Sunday at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
With the win the Blue Devils improve to 4-1 on the year while the Aggies drop to 0-4 overall.
The Blue Devils got off to a good start by pulling out two close doubles matches. In a matchup between two of the top doubles teams in the country, Duke earned a victory at the No. 1 singles spot when the No. 9 pairing of Joey Atas and Jonathan Stokke won 8-6 against No. 14 Brett Joelson and Bryan Wooten of Texas A&M. Atas and Stokke are now 13-3 in doubles this season. At the No. 3 doubles position, Duke's Ned Samuelson and Ludovic Walter used a tiebreaker to defeat Marcus Lunt and Conor Pollock 9-8 (5) and give the Blue Devils the double point.
Duke continued their strong singles play with all six singles players winning the first set. Peter Rodrigues, a junior from Estoril, Portugal, stayed perfect in dual matches, cruising to his fifth win and third at the No. 3 position. He defeated Mohammed Dakki 6-0, 6-2 to improve to 11-6 overall on the year. Stokke, ranked No. 20 in the FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings, won his team-high 18th singles match of the year, defeating Wooten at the No. 2 spot 6-0, 6-4 to claim the victory and move to 18-9 overall. Atas and Christopher Brown were also victorious in straight sets. Atas improved to 3-0 since moving to the No. 4 position in the lineup. He defeated Pollock 6-2, 6-4 to clinch the win for the Blue Devils and even his overall record at 7-7. Brown won easily at the No. 6 spot, defeating Joelson 6-3, 6-1 to move to 2-0 in the sixth spot and 9-6 for the season.
The No. 1 and No. 5 singles matches were each suspended due to time restraints. In the No. 1 match, Walter, ranked No. 9 in the country, held a lead over No. 16 Jerry Makowski of Texas A&M. Walter won the first set 6-4 but Makowski held a 2-1 advantage in the second before the match was stopped. Kiril Dimitrov, a freshman from Sofia, Bulgaria, was also leading at the No. 5 singles position. Dimitrov was ahead 4-2 in the second set after winning the first 6-4 against the Aggies' John Nallon.
The Blue Devils will leave Wednesday for the USTA-ITA National Team Indoor Championships which will be held Feb. 17-20 in Seattle, Wash. Duke is the eighth seed and will take on No. 9 Baylor in the first round at 2 p.m. EST on Friday. The Bears are 2-2 this year with the two setbacks coming to Florida, the current No.1 team in the country and Virginia, the team ranked No. 1 in the first team rankings.
