DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke men's tennis team will continue fall action this weekend as the Blue Devils head to Charlottesville, Va. for the UVA Fall Invitational, hosted by the University of Virginia. The tournament will run from Friday, Sept. 15 thru Sunday, Sept. 17 with play beginning at 9 a.m. each day.
Even though the tournament is only five years old, the UVA Fall Invitational has quickly become one of the nation's most prestigious collegiate tournaments. Last year's participants included five 2006 All-Americas who were part of a larger group of seven that would be selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championships.
This year's event will draw players from 22 schools, including 21 players that are ranked in the preseason ITA singles rankings. Ten of those players competed in last season's NCAA Singles Championships, making the 2006 tournament field one of the strongest in the nation.
There will be eight Duke student-athletes competing, led by seniors Joey Atas and Peter Rodrigues, who were two of three Blue Devils to receive national recognition when the preseason ITA rankings were released on Sept. 8. Rodrigues received a singles ranking of No. 44 and combines with Atas to form the 16th-ranked doubles team in the country. Freshman Dylan Arnould sits at No. 111 in the singles rankings, as well.
Rodrigues tallied the best record on the team in ACC play last year with a 9-2 mark and was an All-ACC selection. He finished the year ranked No. 68 in the ITA singles rankings.
Atas, a native of Baltimore, Md., was selected as an All-America in doubles after he and Jonathon Stokke advanced to the quarterfinals in the NCAA Championships last season.
Also seeing action this weekend will be junior Alex Stone (Bronx, N.Y), junior David Goulet (Longueuil, Quebec), sophomore Kiril Dimitrov (Sofia Bulgaria), and freshmen Aaron Carpenter (Houston, Texas) and David Lue (Houston, Texas).
Draws will be released Thursday evening.
