DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke men's tennis team will kick off their 2006 fall season this weekend when the Blue Devils head to Athens, G.A. for the Southern Intercollegiate Championships, hosted by the University of Georgia. This yearly event is the oldest fall tournament in the South, originating in 1968, and draws some of the best talent in the region.
There will be seven Duke student-athletes competing, led by seniors Joey Atas and Peter Rodrigues. Atlas, a native of Baltimore, Mary., was selected as an All-America in doubles after he and Jonathon Stokke advanced to the quarterfinals in the NCAA Championships last season. He finished the 2005-06 campaign ranked at No. 10 in doubles.
Rodrigues, a product of Estoril, Portugal, tallied the best record on the team in ACC play last year with a 9-2 mark and was named to the All-ACC team. He finished the year ranked No. 68 in the final ITA singles rankings.
Also seeing action this weekend will be junior Alex Stone (Bronx, N.Y), junior David Goulet (Longueuil, Quebec), sophomore Kiril Dimitrov (Sofia Bulgaria), freshman Aaron Carpenter (Houston, Texas) and freshman David Lue (Houston, Texas).
The tournament, which will take place at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, will be comprised of three singles divisions and two doubles divisions. This exciting event will start at 8 a.m. Friday morning and last through Monday morning. Draws will be released Thursday evening.
