
Men?s Tennis Completes First Day of Action at Southern Intercollegiate Championships

ATHENS, G.A. - The Duke men's tennis team began its fall season on Friday, as seven members of the team completed day one of action at the 38th annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships, held at the University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
The tournament is comprised of three singles divisions and two doubles divisions. Division I and Division II singles features full 64-man draws, while Division III is a 60-man bracket. There are also two doubles divisions, with approximately 40 teams each.
In the Division I singles bracket, sophomore Kiril Dimitrov defeated E. Olivares of East Tennessee State in two sets, 6-3 6-3, to advance to the round of 32. The Bulgaria native will meet the tournament's No. 2 seed, Travis Hegleson of the University of Georgia, tomorrow at 9 a.m.
Also playing the Division I singles bracket was senior Joey Atas, who was defeated by Nejc Podkrajsek (GSU), 6-3, 6-3. Classmate Peter Rodrigues was in action as well, and came away with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Greg Anderson (UK). Rodrigues will meet Brock Sakey of the University of Central Florida tomorrow at 9:30 a.m.
The Division II singles bracket saw two Blue Devils emerge victorious, as freshman Aaron Carpenter and junior David Goulet both came away with two-set wins. Carpenter defeated ETSU's Sebastian Serrano, 7-5, 7-6 (6), and will meet Brando Carace of Virginia Tech tomorrow at 8 a.m. Goulet defeated Hunter Gerlach (MUR), 6-3, 6-1, and is set to meet Justin Malina (C of C) tomorrow at 8 a.m. as well.
Junior Alex Stone and freshman David Lue were also in action in the Division II bracket, but were defeated by Michigan State's Ryan Farlow (6-3, 6-3) and Vladimir Paunic (SELA), 6-3, 7-5, respectively.
Doubles action saw two Blue Devil duos receive first-round byes. Artas and Goulet combine to form the tournament's No. 1 seeded team, and will first see action tomorrow. Rodrigues and Stone will also begin doubles play tomorrow. Dimitrov and Carpenter form the third Duke doubles team, as they met Tyler Worley and Dusan Milovanic (MOR) this afternoon. Results were not available.
The Southern Intercollegiate Championships is the South's oldest fall tournament. Originated in 1968, the tournament attracts many of the top collegiate players in the region, as student-athletes from 35 different schools are taking part in this year's tournament.
