Durham, N.C. ? Four members of the Duke men's tennis team will attempt to qualify for the main draw of the ITA Wilson Mideast Regional Championships on Wednesday as they compete in open qualifying on the University of Virginia campus in Charlottesville, Va.
Aaron Carpenter is the No. 4 seed in qualifying while Alain Michel is the No. 9 seed. Christopher Price and David Lue will also attempt to qualify. The four players will all compete in singles qualifying while Carpenter and Michel will also play together for the first time as they try to qualify in doubles.
Carpenter and Michel both enter the tournament with a 2-2 record on the season in singles. Carpenter has a first round bye and then will face Philip Nemec of Elon in the round of 64. Michel also starts with a bye before drawing either Juan Ortiz of Morgan State or Andrew Veeder of Gardner-Webb.
Price has compiled a 1-2 mark in his first three collegiate matches. He will start out in the round of 128 with a match against Richmond's William Minter. Lue has a first round bye and then will square off against 17th-seeded Kyle Baker of North Carolina. Lue has won his last three matches and is 3-2 on the year.
In doubles Carpenter and Michel begin with a match against Sebastian Gonzales-Orbegoso and Leandro Osorio of USC-Upstate.
The winners of the open qualifying will advance to the main draw which begins on Thursday.
