Charlottesville, Va. ? Four Duke men's tennis players competed in qualifying rounds of the ITA Wilson Mideast Regional Championships on Wednesday in Charlottesville, Va. but could not advance as each of them suffered defeats on the day.
Freshman Alain Michel won his first match of the day. He defeated Gardner-Webb's Andrew Veeder in straight sets 7-6 (3), 6-3. He then lost to Winthrop's Rodrigo Santos 6-2, 6-0 in the final qualifier match.
Christopher Price, a freshman from Houston, Texas, also won his first match. He downed Richmond's William Minter by a 6-2, 6-2 count. Price's next match against Wofford's George Kernodle was neck-and-neck. The first two sets came down to a tiebreaker with each player winning one. Kernodle was able to come out on top, however, in the third set, 6-4.
Aaron Carpenter was the fourth seed in the qualifying bracket. He faced a Philip Nemec of Elon to start the tournament. Carpenter started out with a 6-2 win in the first set but Nemec bounced back to win the second set 6-1 and then won a tight third set on a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7).
David Lue also lost his first match. He suffered a 6-2, 6-2 loss to Kyle Baker of North Carolina.
Four other Blue Devils will begin play in the ITA Regionals Main Draw on Thursday. Kiril Dimitrov is the No. 5 seed and will have a first round bye. He will play the winner of the first round match between Grega Terez of Charleston Southern and North Carolina's Andrew Crone.
Reid Carleton is the No. 17 seed and will await the winner of the round of 128 match between Elon's Mason Schermerhorn and Lisandro Picardo of East Tennessee State. Dylan Arnould is also a No. 17 seed and will square off against the winner between two ACC players, Georgia Tech's Josa Muguruza and North Carolina's Clay Donato.
Duke seniors Alex Stone and David Goulet will both play in the round of 128. Goulet has a match scheduled against Moises Serrano of East Tennessee State and Stone will go up against Radford's Zack Watson.
The main draw begins on Thursday and runs through Monday. The finalists will advance to play in the ITA National Indoor Tournament Nov. 1-4.
