
No. 16 Duke Falls At No. 13 Texas, 5-2

AUSTIN, Texas - The No. 16 Duke men's tennis squad fell to 13th-ranked Texas on Saturday afternoon at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin, Texas. The Blue Devils fall even at 5-5 (0-0 ACC), while the Longhorns improve to 7-4 (0-0 Big 12) on the season, as the all-time series between Duke and Texas is now knotted at 8-8.
Doubles action saw the point came down to the final match, as both teams fought hard through the end. The Duke duo of sophomore Kiril Dimitrov and junior Alex Stone fell to Luis Diaz Barriga and Bernhard Deussner, 8-3, at the No. 3 spot to start things off, but the Blue Devils rebounded with a win at No. 1, as the 11th-ranked tandem of senior Joey Atas and junior David Goulet defeated 48th-ranked Josh Zavala and Dimitar Kutrovsky, 8-6.
With the victory, Atas and Goulet improved to 7-2 on the season in dual matches, a record that includes a 4-0 mark versus ranked opponents.
At No. 2 doubles, Texas' Reyes Varela and Milan Mihailovic came away with a tight 9-7 victory over senior Peter Rodrigues and freshman Dylan Arnould to notch the doubles point for the Longhorns.
Singles action saw Texas win three straight singles matches to clinch the victory. Zavala defeated freshman Aaron Carpenter, 6-2, 6-4, and Rook Schellenberg defeated 98th-ranked Arnould, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, while Goulet fell to Diaz Barriga, 7-6, 7-5.
Duke got on the board with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 win at No. 4, courtesy of 36th-ranked Dimitrov, as he posted a win over 85th-ranked Mihailovic. No. 63 Rodrigues followed suit at No. 1, defeating Kutrovsky, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.
No. 95 Atas fell to Miguel Reyes Varela in a tough three-set battle, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), at No. 2 to put the final score at 5-2 in favor of Texas.
The Blue Devils will remain in Texas for two more matches, as they take on No. 35 Texas A&M on March 12 and No. 66 TCU on March 14. After Duke's spring trip concludes, the Blue Devils will then begin conference play at No. 20 Clemson (March 24) and No. 44 Georgia Tech (March 25).
