COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The No. 16 Duke men's tennis team notched a 4-3 victory over 35th-ranked Texas A&M on Monday at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center, as freshman Dylan Arnould came through with a three-set victory in the last match of the evening to give the Blue Devils the win.
The Aggies came out of the gate with a win at the No. 3 doubles spot as Conor Pollock and Matt Bain defeated the junior tandem of Ned Samuelson and Alex Stone, 8-5. Duke then bounced back with a win at the No. 1 position, as the 11th-ranked duo of senior Joey Atas and junior David Goulet defeated Jerry Makowski and Brett Joelson, 8-5, but the Aggie duo of Mike Beatty and Bryan Wooten defeated Arnould and senior Peter Rodrigues, 8-6, at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point.
Atas and Goulet are now 8-2 on the season in dual matches, a record that includes a 4-0 mark versus ranked opponents.
Kiril Dimitrov, the 36th-ranked sophomore, notched a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Wooten at the No. 4 spot to knot the score at one a piece, before John Nallon got past freshman Aaron Carpenter, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 6 to put Texas A&M back on top, 2-1.
At No. 2, 95th-ranked Atas, after losing the first set 6-1, stormed back to take the final two sets, 6-1, 6-4, over Pollock to pull Duke even once again at 2-2.
Sixty-third-ranked Rodrigues then posted a 6-3, 6-4 win over Makowski at the No. 1 spot to put the Blue Devils in control, 3-2, but Texas A&M's Luka Ocvirk defeated Goulet, 7-6, 6-4, at No. 3 to put the score at 3-3.
As it came down to the final match of the night, 98th-ranked Arnould bounced back from a 6-4 first-set loss to take sets two and three, 7-6, 6-1, for the win over Bain at the No. 5 slot, giving Duke the 4-3 victory.
“This was an outstanding win for us over a great team on the road,” said Duke head coach Jay Lapidus. “I was really proud of all of our guys across the board. After losing the doubles point, Kiril got us on the board, then our two seniors really stepped it up for us, and for a freshman to come up huge like Dylan did, was great to see.”
Duke improves to 6-5 (0-0 ACC), while Texas A&M falls to 8-4 (0-0 Big 12).
The Blue Devils will remain in Texas for one more match this week as they take on No. 66 TCU on March 14. After Duke's spring trip concludes, the Blue Devils will then begin conference play at No. 20 Clemson (March 24) and No. 44 Georgia Tech (March 25).
