Kiril Dimitrov defeated a ranked opponent for the second straight day to advance to the final round of qualifying at the 2008 D'Novo/ITA Men's All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
One day after defeating the No. 65 player in the nation, Dimitrov went up against No. 96 Matt Allare of Ohio State. Dimitrov had to battle back for a victory on Tuesday as Allare came out of the gate strong with a 6-2 win in the first set. The second set was almost reversed as Duke's senior turned things around for a 6-3 victory. The final set brought a back-and-forth battle that came down to the wire only to see Dimitrov moving on to the next round with a 7-5 edge.
Dimitrov improved to 7-2 on the season with the victory and is 4-2 against ranked opponents. He needs one more victory to qualify for the main draw. He will face Abdullah Magdas of Southern California on Wednesday to decide who moves on. Magdas knocked off the No. 15 seed in qualifying, No. 62 Robin Fahgen of SMU, on Tuesday in three sets.
Duke's lone doubles team competing in the ITA All-Americans, Dimitrov and
Reid Carleton, suffered a loss in their opening match of qualifying. The duo squared off against Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala of Texas and fell 8-3.
Dimitrov is scheduled to play at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. The tournament is being held at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. The main draw is slated to start on Thursday with the championship matches to take place Sunday.
