DURHAM, N.C. ?Reid Carleton continued his great start to the 2008 season with a victory in the finals of the UVA Ranked Plus One Invitational in Charlottesville, Va. for his first collegiate tournament championship.
Ranked No. 39 in the country, Carleton faced No. 104 Michael Shabaz in the championship match. Shabaz was coming off a victory over the top seed and No. 10 John-Patrick Smith of Tennessee but on Sunday it was all Carleton coming out on top. The match was tight from start to finish. Carleton gained an early advantage by winning a tiebreaker in the first set. Shabaz battled back to win the second set 6-4 but in the end Carleton pulled away with a 6-2 victory in the third set. Carleton improved to 8-1 on the season with his first career tournament title.
“The guy Reid played was really good so it was a big win for him,” said head coach Ramsey Smith. “This is one of the hardest college tournaments around with half the players ranked.
This result for Reid was a result of the hard work over the last month that he has put into tennis. Everything came together and clicked for him. He was moving extremely well and was aggressive in going after shots. That is the key for him because he moves as well as anybody.”
Senior Kiril Dimitrov also had a big day for the Blue Devils. He earned his second straight victory over a ranked opponent in the backdraw final. Dimitrov faced No. 79 Ivan Salec of Radford. Salec dominated the first set with a 6-1 win but Dimitrov fought his way to a 6-4 second-set victory. The match went to a super tiebreaker in the third set with Dimitrov coming out on top 10-6.
“For Kiril to get two ranked wins and win the backdraw, it was really good,” said Smith. “He was getting beat bad in the first set but hung around and competed to the end.”
In doubles, Torsten Wietoska and Dylan Arnould won the A-3 backraw finals match. They downed Matt Brewer and Bryan Schwartz of Tennessee, 8-6. Carleton and Jared Pinsky won the backdraw third place match in the A-2 doubles bracket. The duo defeated Damon Gooch and Oscar Podlewski of Elon, 8-5.
At the UNC Fall Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C., Duke's David Lue played in the backdraw finals against Eric Turner of N.C. State. After losing the first set 6-1, Lue forced a super tiebreaker with a 6-3 victory in the second set. However, Turner was able to edge out Lue in the tiebreaker 10-5 for the match victory.
The Blue Devils will have the next week off before beginning play at the D'Novo Men's All-American Championships qualifying in Tulsa, Okla. Oct. 6-8.
